We should do everything that we can to get our kids healthy.There are many factors that we need to be aware of so that we can have healthy kids.
At this time we will look at three of these factors: 1. Physical activity, 2. Hydration, 3. Nutrition.
1. Physical Activity:
Activity benefits a child in more ways than merely physical. Overall, the child is benefitted not only physically, but also psychologically and socially. When children are allowed to play consistently, it helps to develop their muscles and their coordination.Their bones and joints even become stronger and they are able to withstand injury. Physical fitness affects their immune systems as well, making them less susceptible to diseases. It is believed that children who are active are very resistant to becoming sick less than those who are inactive. Parents therefore should encourage their children to get involved as much as possible in physical activities.
2. Hydration:
Do you know that children use more energy than adults even though they may perform the same activity? This means their bodies are heated more quickly, thus the need for fluids is vey important.Children should drink eight to ten glasses of water throughout the day. While they are being active, they should rehydrate more often, about every twenty minutes so that their fluid intake is replaced after losing so much as they perspire. When the weather is hot, they should get fluids more often than twenty minutes. As parents, teachers and other child care professionals, we should be able to tell signs of dehydration. These signs are cramping in the muscles, darker urine and complaints of having a light head.
3.Nutrition:
Nutrition and physical activity must work together. If children are to perform at their very best physically, they need to have adequate nutrition. We have the tendency to load children with sugar-filled and salty snacks, puddings, pastry and sweet soft drinks. Foods that are filled with sugar can cause spikes of energy then lows of exhaustion that can leave children feeling tired, irritable and having poor concentration. As adults we should encourage them to eat healthy snacks that are made up of colorful fruits and vegetables. Most of these have natural sugar plus the fiber and vitamins that children need. When we offer healthy foods to children when they are young, eating healthfully is continued through adulthood and will last a lifetime.
All the nutrients that children need cannot be gotten from foods all the time, therefore it would be wise to give them nutritional supplements to ensure that their immune systems are strong.
